AKA: Finding a good fit.

Choosing a tutor is a little like choosing a doctor. When looking for a new doctor, you likely start by searching for a particular specialty. If you're having strange pains in your left knee a cardiologist would not be your best choice. You might also search by location because who wants to travel for two hours to have their knee examined? Once you have a few names most people will then seek reviews - what's it actually like to work with this person? What's their bedside manner - do they have a direct, serious approach or are they more laidback and personable? Are they more like a scratchy pair of wool socks or a comfy set of sweats?

Finding a good fit is about all of these things; you want a doctor who has the knowledge to help you, is located someplace convenient, and whose personality is one you'll be comfortable with. I have the knowledge and years of experience as a teacher and location is not an issue since I teach remotely. But before you reach out to inquire about my services, I want you to feel like you know me a little because that bedside manner part is extra important for a tutor. When your child feels at ease, feels like they can just be whoever they are, then they're more likely to be fully engaged, relaxed, and be able to leave their mind wide open for learning.

Friends

A few days ago I took my sister to see The Friends Experience in NYC. We're both big fans though we didn't get to experience the show together. I had just graduated from college and wasn't living at home when it first aired in 1994. It was so much fun to spend the night together - just the two of us - immersing ourselves in the sets from this much-loved show. That's me in the photo, having a blast in everything Chandler owns, from "The One Where No One's Ready."

When I show up for my students, I need to be prepared for a lot of different situations and personalities. You could think of it as dressing for the weather, where the weather might change five times a day. Some students require the button-down shirt - they respond best to a straightforward, no messing around kind of instruction. Some want the polka-dot tie; they like a bit of zany in their lessons. Some students are all about the relaxing comfort of a pair of well-loved sweats.

So while I won't show up for a lesson literally wearing everything I own, you can trust that I'll have the right "outfit" for your child...even if I have to peel a few layers to get it just right.

So...is it a fit?

I'm guessing that you've either decided that I'm not quite the right fit for your family or you're thinking that you'd like to watch an episode of Friends with me because I seem like fun. (I am.)

If it's the former, I wish you the best as you continue your search for an amazing tutor! If it's the latter, I hope you'll reach out. I'll even give you a handy link: get in touch with Morah Tova.
